The Askfjallen are a short but active chain of volcanic mountains and craters in northern Ydra, lying between the the western flank of the Hridbalk and the fjords of the region's interior. They contain some of Ydra's tallest peaks, but do not form a contiguous range; instead, their highest points lie dozens of leagues from each other, separated by wide expanses of rolling hills.

Despite its northerly latitude, the hills footing the Askfjallen are very productive, bearing some of Ydra's finest crops during the short growing season; its hot mineral springs, too, are coveted during Ydra's long winters. This fertility is balanced by desolation, however, for other points within the range are sterile wastelands of salt and sulfur, or gray miles of ash scoured by previous eruptions.
