Whittling is the art of carving objects from wood, bone, or antler. A knife and a piece of material (such as a stick or branch) is usually all that is required to whittle something. While most whittled goods have little to no resale value, a skilled whittler is invaluable to those who make their own tools and weapons.

Torches are one of the simplest, most common whittled goods. Other potential uses of this skill include making wooden handles of varying lengths, arrow shafts, beads, bone jewelry, and assorted bows.

The primary difference between whittling and carpentry is that whittling is used to pare away material with a knife, whereas carpentry is more focused on the assembly of objects; the latter also tends to require more of an investment of time and money to yield results.
